2000s to present day

Today, Bird Bros is proud to remain a family owned and run business. Founders, Carl and Peter still own the company, and their sons Matthew and Stuart are both directors sharing responsibility for managing the operational, commercial and technical aspects of the business.

Since the turn of the century, the company has invested over £20 million including a £6 million project to remove the traditional old style ‘battery cages’ and install brand new enriched colonies, which ensures that our welfare standards are among the highest in the world for hens kept in intensive systems.

Our original Swineshead farm is now home to over 450,000 hens laying over 2.5 million eggs every week, which helps us to meet the ever-growing demand for affordable, high quality British produced eggs.

We have also recently invested £5 million in a brand new head office, a new state-of-the-art Packing Centre and renewable energy systems. Our new Packing Centre houses a fully automatic egg sorting grader and packing facilities, which give us complete traceability right to your kitchen table.

The egg grading machine is capable of carefully packing over one million eggs a day into a variety of packs, ensuring that our fresh eggs reach you in the shortest time possible.

Energy efficiency was also very important when designing our new buildings which include innovative new technologies to make and save electricity. A 250KW solar unit was installed, which should pay for itself within five years and can be expanded in the future. The extensive PIR lighting system is operated automatically by motion, which brings us big energy savings, and highly efficient insulation also helps reduce energy waste.

Our free range eggs supply has also seen massive growth in recent years. A new free range egg farm is currently under construction and we have just recently launched our premium free range egg brand called Roamin’ Free.

We’ve also invested in a brand new lorry to collect free-range eggs from our producers. The 26 tonne Iveco Stralis has pneumatic air suspension offering a smooth ride for the delicate cargo. It brings our fleet up to 12 vehicles which now carry over 150 million eggs a year.

All of these developments will enable us to carry on meeting the needs of our customers, so that families up and down the country can continue enjoying Bird Bros eggs for many more years to come.
