2000s to present day

Today, Bird Bros is proud to remain a family owned and run business. Founders, Carl and Peter are still actively involved in running the company and their sons Matthew and Stuart are both directors sharing responsibility for managing the operational, commercial and technical aspects of the modern business.

Since the turn of the century, the company has invested over £20 million, including a £6 million project in 2011 to remove the traditional old style ‘battery cages’ and install new enriched colony cages, which ensures that our welfare standards are among the highest in the world for hens kept in intensive systems.

We have also recently invested £5 million in a brand new state-of-the-art Packing Centre and head offices complete with renewable energy systems. Our low carbon Packing Centre houses a fully automatic egg sorting grader and packing facilities, which give us complete traceability from our laying farms right to your kitchen table.

The latest generation egg grading machine is capable of carefully packing over one million eggs a day into a variety of packs, ensuring that our fresh eggs reach you in the shortest time possible.

Energy efficiency was also very important when designing our new buildings which include innovative new technologies to make and save electricity. A 250KW solar unit was installed and can be expanded in the future. An extensive PIR lighting system was installed and is operated automatically by motion detection, which brings big energy reductions. Highly efficient insulation in the building fabrication also helps reduce energy waste along with LED lighting.

In line with changing consumer trends, our free range egg supply has also seen massive growth in recent years. A new company owned, flagship free range egg farm has recently been completed in Cambridgeshire and we have just recently launched our premium free range egg brand called Birds Roamin’ Free.

All of these developments will enable us to carry on meeting the needs of our customers, so that families up and down the country can continue enjoying Bird Bros eggs for many more years to come.
