Bird Bros expands barn egg range with new ‘family packs’

Egg producer Bird Bros has announced the expansion of its barn egg range to seven retail products and two catering products.

The move comes just four months on from the launch of Bird Bros’ inaugural barn egg brand, Roost Eggs, which hit shelves at the end of last year.

The range originally focused on 6-pack and 12-pack mixed eggs, supported by 5 and 15 dozen catering packs for the foodservice industry. As a result of demand, the range has now been extended to include four new retail products – 12 and 15 ‘family packs’ of both medium and large eggs.

Matthew Bird, commercial director at Bird Bros, said: “Interest in our barn egg offering has been phenomenal since we introduced our Roost Egg product range, so including bigger pack sizes made perfect sense.

“When we launched Roost Eggs, we were confident the brand would resonate with
customers seeking a welfare friendly, value-oriented product, and it transpires that interest has surpassed expectations – so we are very excited to be adding new product lines.

“In addition to a growing retail offer, we’ve successfully completed customer-driven
transitions to barn from colony within the food service sector and expect to have further conversations as the year unfolds. The start of 2025 has been particularly challenging for our industry with the continued threat of avian influenza and the on-going economic challenges that the UK farming industry continues to experience, so it’s great to see that our efforts are resonating with customers”.

The expanded range brings the company closer to its multi-million-pound Vision 2028 strategy, which will see Bird Bros phasing out colony cage egg production at its Sunny Farm headquarters in Bedfordshire, ending it completely by the end of 2028.

Barn eggs are laid by hens that are housed in large, climate-controlled sheds. The hens can roam freely within the shed, socialising and perching. The model is common across Europe, especially in locations where outdoor conditions and temperatures may be detrimental to hen comfort and welfare.
